Blinding Me With Science
April 11, 2007
Some people have labeled me as a geek. That’s okay. Bill Gates is a geek, and he’s the richest man in the world. I’m in good company.
Thermo Fisher Scientific is “the world leader in serving science, enabling our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer.” They make science stuff from disposable laboratory glassware to mass spectrometers. I gotta have one of those.
I can hear the conversation: “What you got going on in the den, Robert?” Oh, I’m just separating some ions from different masses. “Cool! What sort of masses are you using?” Marshmallows and cheese doodles.
I’d like a particle accelerator, but it may be difficult to get a license to operate one in the backyard.
Paul Meister was previously a Vice Chairman of Fisher Scientific when that company was acquired by Thermo Electron last year. He became Chairman of the Board of the combined company, now known as Thermo Fisher Scientific. He is not seeking re-election to the Board, and has relinquished his position as Chairman.
From my cover letter: “My background as a journalist will help me to sort through the often complex and complicated scientific and/or business issues that the board will be considering. Further, my profession requires me to carefully weigh all options and reach an independent conclusion.”
They plan on having a new director to present to stockholders at the annual meeting next month.
